Washing dishes in the hot, sudsy water, I hear the morning traffic get busier. With my front door ajar I can hear the road noise as cars, semis & motorcycles zoom by along US19, a 6 lane road much like an Interstate highway, just outside my front door. To some that could be disturbing or annoying to hear traffic so close, but to me, oddly enough-given my LOVE of nature, it’s a soothing, familiar sound.
Having spent my first 8 years living mere feet from a 2-lane country, “in between little towns” road with a 55 mph speed limit, I’m used to the background noises of the highway. Who doesn’t love the sound of a loud motorcycle coming in the distance, closer, closer & closer still, until it reaches and passes you, then hearing it fade away into it’s future… Ah, the sounds of my childhood… I’ll reminisce for a moment… also includes trains! Yes, I’m from the wrong side of the tracks! The industrial metal sound of the train on the tracks-clickety-clack-and the train horn! Coincidentally I am also close enough to train tracks, here in the present, to hear them blow the horn once in a while-THAT is a sound I love!
Back to the warm, sudsy dishwater. I let my mind wander into the past, the road sounds taking me back to former road trips and into fantasies of future road trips. I let the background sounds of the road color my mental time travel to a highway rest stop somewhere, anywhere away from here.
