The “O” is for Oprah of course! Doesn’t Oprah have a book club? Yeah, I thought so. Well, so do I! Not really, but I will share with you my top 10 or so favorite books from my shelf. In no particular order they are;
Sacred Geometry is so intriguing! The way nature is mathematically perfect, there’s definitely divinity present. And I LOVE nature! Shells, pine cones, the way the branches grow on a tree, the way a river winds back and forth-it’s all sacred geometry.
Scar Tissue is and always will be one of my favorite books since it is by and about one of my favorite people of all time, Anthony Kiedis! In case you don’t know, he is the singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and has been for almost 40 years. I am surprised he had any help writing the bio, since he is a stellar lyricist. The book came out in 2004 and it’s a wild ride on the roller coaster of love! I can’t wait for an update to it, but rumor has it he isn’t planning on it and regretted writing this one.
The Spiritual Emerson…Emerson… The famous Ralph Waldo Emerson…What can I say? His words seem to come from another dimension as he talks about things we are still learning about today and barely have figured out. The man lived from 1803 to 1882. Truly ahead of his time and in touch with the divine. This handy little paperback includes 7 of his essays and is very portable.
The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life by Thomas Moore. Need I say “Moore”? If you like this author, then you will love this book which includes topics such as; Nature, Home, Habitat, World, Psyche, Art, Word, Sacred, Ritual and Spirits. Mr. Moore expounds on the variety of ways we can frame our everyday places and interactions with more soul and presence.
Self-Healing Reiki Freeing the Symbols, Attunements, and Techniques by Barbara Emerson. I instantly recognize the “Emerson” connection, but remind myself there are no coincidences! This is my Reiki ‘bible’. It has all the previously concealed symbols and instructions on the practice of Reiki. In my opinion, it can be as complicated as one wants to make it, but I want to share with you what I learned in massage school; very young children around the age of first grade were taught to simply say “Reiki On” to ignite the healing energy and give Reiki to each other when needed.
Breaking the Habit of being Yourself How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One by Dr. Joe Dispenza. Have you ever heard of Epigenetics? How about Quantum physics? I first saw Dr. Joe in the docu-movie (not sure that’s a word, but I love inventing new words!) “What the Bleep do We Know?” If you want to go down this rabbit hole and have no prior knowledge of these topics, I suggest watching the movie first. If you are ready to really take control of your life, then read this book! If you just want to dive right in, then watch Dr. Joe on Youtube.
One Day My Soul Just Opened Up 40 Days and 40 Nights Toward Spiritual Strength and Personal Growth by Iyanla Vanzant. An oldie but a goodie. Honestly, I originally bought this book because it is pretty. I know. But it is a gem! Thumbing through this book to give you a synopsis I find I could benefit from reading it one …more…time. The synopsis is summed up pretty well in the subtitle.
the emotionally absent mother How to Recognize and Heal the Invisible Effects of Childhood Emotional Neglect by Jasmin Lee Cori. Deep breath-wooo-exhale! Having a label helped me tremendously in mending my relationship with my mother. I never knew this was a thing, but it is! Having a label helped me to begin to understand that it was not my fault. Chances are, if you felt unloved by your mother she likely also felt that way about her own mother.
The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie. This book contains a topic or thought for every day of the year, even leap year! Each entry is dated, has a topic, a quote, a few paragraphs and a mantra to keep in mind throughout the day. I discovered it while attending CODA meetings some years ago. CODA is a twelve step oriented group for Codependent people. Codependency is defined as a person who enables a loved one who has an addiction, and suffers for it. Personally, I was just addicted to relationships. CODA was another life changer for me.
Bacavi Journey to Reed Springs by Peter Whiteley. This is a book written by white man about “red” man. However, the author did immerse himself into the surroundings and gained the trust of the Hopi people in order to tell their story. This book covers the time before, during and after the Oraibi split of 1909. I believe this book was written with the highest respect for the indigenous people, even though it was not written by them. There are many historical photos contained within.
With the West in Her Eyes The Story of a Modern Pioneer by Kathleen Strange. Copyright 1937 and dedicated “To Farm Women-Pioneers All” I enjoyed this biographical book as I dream of and scheme about my own move west and pioneering on my own land. It is a real story about moving from England to the West coast of Canada in 1919 and building a life from scratch that turns out very profitable by the end of the book. An entertaining and easy read.
Care of the Soul A guide for Cultivating Depth and Sacredness In Everyday Life by Thomas Moore. The prelude to the aforementioned book by Mr. Moore. Just more of what he is known for; inspiration, insight and a way to perceive life and all it’s encumbrances with a spiritual perspective.
“Never Give Up” is my current journal which was given to me by my dear friend for my most recent birthday. These days I journal every morning to mostly process the prior day’s events, but also to vent or try to sort things out. Journaling is recommended by high performers, but I’ve been writing intermittently since I was a tween.
